Keeping Tahoe Blue Starts With the People Standing In It

Beach managers and volunteers gear up for another summer of protecting the lake

The League to Save Lake Tahoe is teaming up with the Forest Service’s Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, local nonprofits, and beach operators again this summer to keep the lake’s water clear for the crowds headed up for the season.

July 4th is the busiest day of the year at Tahoe and also the day that leaves the most trash behind. More than a decade ago, the League started the “Keep Tahoe, Red, White & Blue” cleanup in response, and this year marks the 11th annual event. Volunteers come from inside and outside the Basin – some plan actual vacation days around it – to clear the beaches the morning after the fireworks.

Pack it in, pack it out, and the lake stays the color that made you want to visit in the first place. If you’re headed up for the Fourth, the July 5th cleanup could use another set of hands.
