Johnson Valley Update — BlueRibbon Coalition Responds to the Marine Corps’ R2509 Fact Sheet

The Johnson Valley community has been holding its breath these past months as the U.S. Marine Corps’ Special Use Airspace proposal, R2509, moves through the public process. After an intense wave of local comments and outreach, momentum slowed during the government shutdown — but the Marines have since released public fact sheets about the proposal. That put new material in front of the public, and it’s precisely the sort of moment when clear information matters most.

2020 Easter Jeep Safari CANCELLED

Red Rock 4-Wheelers, Inc., organizers for the Easter Jeep Safari, have officially cancelled the 2020 edition of the long-running event. I’m not particularly thrilled with this development, as I feel that it doesn’t show an ‘overabundance of caution’ so much as it shows an overabundance of ignorance. I don’t blame Red Rock, I blame Utah, and – in particular – the Grand County council and Moab City, who clearly don’t have a clue and haven’t been listening to information on the virus. Red Rock’s hands were tired. Here’s the notice posted on the Red Rock website:

Marine Corps announces Johnson Valley closure for military training

From the Bureau of Land Management:

The Marine Corps recently notified BLM of their plans to utilize the Johnson Valley Shared Use Area for military training from August 1-30, 2016, and of the associated temporary closure. BLM is working with the Marines to address issues associated with this military training/closure, and to keep the public informed.

BACKGROUND: On December 26, 2013 the National Defense Authorization Act of 2014 (NDAA) was signed into law, authorizing the Marine Corps to occupy the Johnson Valley Shared Use Area (SUA) for two 30-day periods annually during which time the area would be closed to the public. Name change: California Four Wheel Drive Association

Just got an email from the California Association of 4WD Clubs, Inc. letting me know that they’re not them anymore. They’re now the “California Four Wheel Drive Association, Inc.” which does roll off the tongue a bit better. From the email:

During the annual meeting in February the association’s delegates approved the bylaw proposal put forth by Steve Egbert to change the name of the association from the California Association of 4WD Clubs, Inc. to the California Four Wheel Drive Association, Inc. A new logo was also approved. The changes will be phased in slowly — we’ll keep you posted on when new decals and other items will be available.
