The Yosemite Conservancy Award is presented each year to an unsung hero in the Yosemite community — someone who goes above and beyond the requirements of their job to truly make a difference. Erik Westerlund recently was presented with this award for his exceptional efforts in providing interpretation in Yosemite National Park and his many volunteer contributions within the community.
Erik recently formed the Yosemite Natural Club, an open group of professional and armchair naturalists from the Yosemite community who gather regularly to investigate seasonal or special natural-history topics in Yosemite Valley. This informal club develops an esprit de corps among all the area naturalists, and creates a platform for new science to be shared among interpreters.
“Park visitors are inspired by Erik’s programs, because he treats every moment as a new discovery, no matter how many times he has seen or found something,” wrote one of the nominators. “Erik pursues his volunteer work in the community with equal passion and enthusiasm.” He also spends time each week volunteer-teaching music history to students in the El Portal School.
Erik has been described as a humble and witty co-worker and friend who brings life and energy to work and play. He probably won’t tell you himself about this award, so please share congratulations with Erik, who is greatly deserving of this award!
