I got an email asking about a sign that someone had seen up at Jenks Lake in the San Bernardino mountains. I hadn’t heard of any new signs, but checked it out. It appears that there’s a sign posted stating that there’s “increased satanic cult activity” in the area. The “sign” is an 8.5”x11” sheet of white paper printed with a inkjet printer and affixed with masking tape.

A fire now named the Summit Fire is burning in the San Bernardino National Forest near Forest Service Road 2N08 (to the south of the city of Big Bear Lake and west of the Snow Summit ski resort).
The fire appears to have started near Pine Knot Avenue and Knickerbocker Road around 12:30 p.m. Within an hour, the fire had grown to more than 10 acres, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department. At last report, it had grown again to between 20 and 25 acres. It has a moderate rate of spread, and is being fueled by moderate to heavy forest growth.
There are mandatory evacuations for the area from Knickerbocker Road east to Georgia Road and south of Pennsylvania Road to the forest boundary.

Three-Year Project Restores Popular Staging and Riding Areas near Big Bear, Calif.
CYPRESS, Calif. – October 1, 2013 – Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A., volunteers completed a three-year project at one of the nation’s most popular multi-use off-highway vehicle (OHV) staging areas located in the San Bernardino National Forest (SBNF).
As part of the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative and with support of the Southern California Mountains Foundation’s (SCMF) OHV program, volunteers gathered recently for a final round of planting, cleaning and maintaining the popular Cactus Flats staging area and surrounding trails.
The Forest Service has scheduled a 120 acre burn starting as early as April 8, 2013 near Angelus Oaks as part of the Angelus Oaks Fuel Reduction project. The burn is to take place near Forest Road 1N12 (north of Angelus Oaks), and smoke will be visible along State Route 38 (and, certainly, other part of the forest communities as well!).

“Doing this work under these favorable weather conditions reduces the risk of a catastrophic wildfire threatening mountain communities under typical, dryer and windy conditions common to the area in the summer and fall fire seasons,” stated Front Country District Ranger Gabe Garcia. “The understory burn is part of a larger 535 acre project initiated in 2004 and will maintain that work we have all invested in to improve the survivability of Angelus Oaks,” Garcia added.
My understanding of what an ‘understory burn’ is is that it’s a low-intensity controlled burn that can only be done within a narrow climatic window – the conditions have to be right; not too dry, not too windy, etc. Sometimes these are done by aerial ignition in other parts of the world, but locally most of these prescribed burns are set by hand using drip torches.
These prescribed burns reduce the possible fuel loads, which reduces the intensity of wildfires, and releases nutrients which enrich the forest making it healthy.
A healthy forest is a happy forest!

The Forest Service is soliciting public comments for the 2012-2013 Off-Highway Vehicle Grant Applications.

“The Forest Service announced today that San Bernardino National Forest recreation managers will be seeking public comments on their proposals for the 2012/2013 State of California Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) grant program. According to state requirements, public comments can be submitted from Tuesday, March 5 through Monday, April 1, 2013.
A two-step application process is used by the State to allow public comment and feedback before final submittal. The preliminary application was due March 4, 2013. This will open a public review and comment period and will follow with final applications due May 6, 2013. The State is using an Internet-based “On-Line Grant Application” process as the means to apply for State funding.”
