New Reservation System Coming to California State Parks This Summer

California State Parks News Release, Sacramento, CA — Starting this August, Californians will make their state parks camping and tour reservations through a new, faster, easier to use reservation system that features more open access to data.

ReserveCalifornia will go live for all parks on August 1. A variety of features will be phased in between then and March 1, 2018. Below is a breakdown of the features:

Be Gentle to the Lands After a Rain

The “el Niño” weather pattern is being talked about more and more on the news. In Southern California, we’ve had a few days of not particularly heavy rains. This can lead to closure of our national, state, and local parks and recreation areas for a few days after a rain to allow the lands to dry out and become accessible to the public. This isn’t a bad thing; walking on muddy trails can cause damage that can last well for weeks or months afterwards.

Generally, public lands will open up after three days to hikers. Mountain bikers and equestrian trails may stay closed longer. Check at your local park entrance to see what is closed and what is open. From the Irvine Ranch Conservancy page:

“…The expected rain is a welcome change for flora and fauna, but California’s recent drought has left many trail surfaces so dry that even those constructed to direct runoff into surrounding habitat could be overwhelmed by an abundance of rain. Landowners and managers are prepared to evaluate potential storm damage and reduce long-term effects, but you too can minimize rain damage by understanding wet trail conditions and abiding by closures to the trail system.

Incredible Camping Opportunities: Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park

Recently, David Miller posted on the REI posted about seven U.S. state parks that offer up some great camping opportunities (see article: “7 U.S. STATE PARKS WITH INCREDIBLE CAMPING OPPORTUNITIES“). One of the parks mentioned was California’s own Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.

David wrote that  “Camping in a redwood forest is mystical. Tucked within a massive canopy of redwood, western hemlock, Sitka spruce, and grand and Douglas fir, and with a soft layer of duff covering the forest floor, there’s a sense of quiet and peace here. Sounds are dampened. Jedediah Smith is an entrancing place to camp: just imagine looking up through the huge branches and the understory of madrone and bigleaf maple, strolling through the giants in the Stout Grove, and wading in the crystal clear Smith River, the last major undammed river in California.”

California State Parks Welcomes Visitors for July Fourth Holiday Weekend

The California Department of Parks and Recreation says they’re ready to welcome visitors this July 4th weekend.  From their press release:

California State Parks expect to be busy this Fourth of July weekend. The majority of state park campgrounds are already sold out, particularly along the coastal areas and at many historic sites.

With fabulous parks and historic sites across the state, Californians have great options for celebrating the Fourth of July holiday, and State Parks wants to remind them to be safe, and familiarize themselves with some do’s and don’ts. Check out our list of the top 15 Fourth of July tips for park visitors including:

  • Heat Precautions – With triple digit temperatures predicted in some locations, take precautions against heat by staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun.
  • Swim Responsibly – When cooling off, beach users should stay in designated swim areas and be alert for rip currents and sneaker waves.

Not too late to reserve a campsite for July 4th in California’s State Parks!

According to the California State Parks press release, there’s still availability for camping in California’s beautiful state parks! From California State Parks:

Below is a list of 4th of July park availability from Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July 5, 2015. The list provides parks that are available for a one-day, two-day, or a three-day stay. Remember there is a 48-hour reservation window, which means the last day you can book your reservation is Wednesday, July 1, for arrival Friday, July 3.

Don’t forget what they say on their website: “Feel the breeze through the pines, smell an aromatic campfire, hear the waves gently lap the shoreline. It’s just like when you were a kid! Whether it’s near the beach, alongside a mighty redwood, or by a shimmering lake – this is life the way it should be. This is camping at California State Parks!”
