Navy Retires EA-6B Prowler to Palm Springs Air Museum

A press release from the Palm Springs Air Museum:

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – As the sound of two Pratt and Whitney jet engines echoed through the San Jacinto Mountain Range, one of the last four Navy EA-6B ‘Prowler’ fixed-wing aircraft still in service, made its triumphant final fly-by over the Palm Springs Air Museum, Nov. 21, 2014.“It was truly an honor to see such a great aircraft make its final voyage,” said Air Force veteran Don Broadhurst, ramp boss, Palm Springs Air Museum.More than 300 people attended the retirement ceremony to witness the final flight of the aircraft that had been in service since 1987. The A-6 style fixed-wing aircraft has been in service with the U.S. military since the 1960s and part of the Navy’s aerial fleet since 1971 providing electronic warfare support and attack capabilities. “It was an honor to fly this piece of history, and I have a good feeling that [the museum] is going to take good care of the aircraft,” said Navy Cmdr. Kirk Christofferson, executive officer of Electronic Attack Squadron 134.

7th Annual Taste of Flight Gala – A Salute to the Mighty 8th!

Mark your calendar for the 7th Annual Taste of Flight Saturday, October 26! The event will center on the stories of veterans of the Mighty Eighth, the greatest aerial force ever assembled. Check back often for updates on the program participants. The 7th Annual Taste of Flight will feature wine and beer tastings and a delicious selection of food stations hosted by local restaurateurs. Bid on wine and aviation-related items in the Silent Auction. And of course, the Museum’s rare aircraft will be on display front and center.

Yanks Air Museum Open Cockpit Day: P-40 Warhawk July 20th

Yanks Air Museum at the Chino Airport is hosting an open cockpit day on July 20th, 2013.

From the Yanks website:

See the world differently gazing out of a fighter aircraft. Join us for the 1st ever OPEN COCKPIT DAY featuring the P-40 Warhawk. Step back into the 1940’s, Yanks’ authentic fighter cockpits are complete and original.

Tour the Super Constellation, this aircraft flew classified, secret missions to detect invasion from USSR bombers during the 1950’s. She is complete, airworthy and original as any “Connie” we have ever seen. Visit with Connie specialist Gary Harrington to learn more about AEW, Radiomen and their missions.

Train with the 82nd Airborne Living History Re-enactors and jump from the C-47 Skytrain.

Support our cause with Pilot extraordinaire Bob Hayden, he won’t keep his feet on the ground for long. Take to the skies in this PT-17 open-cockpit bi-plane or go aerobatic with pilot Daniel Wotring in the T-6 Texan of WWII fame. AIRCRAFT RIDES start at $50pp.

Planes of Fame Hosting United We Win – Minorities in WWII Event October 12th

The Planes of Fame Air Museum’s living history event for July is United We Win – Minorities in WWII, featuring the North American P-51 Mustang.

From the Planes of Fame Museum’s website:

Open to the public, Planes of Fame Air Museum (Chino, CA) presents its monthly Living History Event. The topic for the October 12 event is ‘United We Win – Minorities in WWII’, featuring the North American P-51 Mustang. A speaker panel of distinguished aviation experts, historians and veterans is featured, followed by a question & answer period and flight demonstration when possible. The P-51 will be on display and will perform a flight demonstration. At 12:00 noon, the Membership Sponsored raffle flight will occur.

The Planes of Fame Air Museum’s living history event for July is Test Pilots, featuring the N9MB Flying Wing, P-59 Airacomet, and the SR-71 cockpit.
