L.A. Times vacation deal in California’s Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park from $99

Mary Forgione, the Los Angeles Times’ Daily Deal and Travel Blogger has written an article about winter vacation deals in Utah and California.  It turns out that there are some great weekday deals in and around our national parks.  In California, for example, Sequoia & Kings Canyon national parks have fewer visitors, snow, and low prices!

From the article:

Though most people visit Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park in summer, winter makes for a beautiful snowshoe or cross-country ski trek amid the giant sequoias. Wuksachi Lodge inside the park offers $99 rooms for midweek travelers. Use the code “HOTRATE” when making a reservation.

When: The rates are good through the end of March, subject to availability.

Tested: I found a room available March 9-11 for the $99 rate, excluding tax. As a comparison, an online check shows rooms at the lodge start at $207 a night during the month of June.

Remember when traveling in winter in places where there could be snow to be prepared. Tire chains or cables are usually required in the parks.  Having lived in the mountains during winter, it’s second nature to carry chains or cables in the car (even with snow tires & four wheel drive).   Not that I’ve ever had to use them, but because I’ve had to convince members of our cracker jack CHP corps that I have them … even though I’m driving a lifted 4WD Jeep with snow tires.  CA Vehicle Code (Section 605, Sections 27450-27503) requires that all vehicles must carry chains or cables when entering a chain-restricted area. Road conditions change often, so if you’re driving up to Sequoia & Kings Canyon check road conditions!  For road conditions, call 559-565-3341, or check with CalTrans.
