If any of you know me, you know that I seem to always be up on the ‘latest news.’ While I’d like to say that’s a function of my big brain, eidetic memory and vast knowledge of everything … the truth is a bit more pedestrian: I read. A lot. I am a voracious devourer of books, media, and blogs.
So it was with some small amount of trepidation that I ventured beyond my comfort zone to find blog distiller. For years I’ve been using Google Reader, and had been happy with it’s little quirks, and grown accustomed to it’s faithful delivery of all of my RSS feeds. When you’re as involved in reading as many blogs, news outlets, tweets, and etc. as I am (it turns out there were 827 blogs that I subscribe to. Who knew?), you really don’t want too much change to happen all at once.
Google announced that it was shutting down Reader. That, for a heavy user like me, sucked ass. It meant that I had to go out, find an app that could present the information to me in a way I’d become used to, and then let me review, trash, or save for later those items that interested me.
TechCrunch (one of the feeds I subscribe to) just announced yesterday that not only had Feedly had passed half a million new users, but that it was #1 in the new U.S. App Store and Google Play. Feedly has quickly become THE Number 1 news app across all three top mobile platforms (iPhone, iPad and Android) this week. According to TC, It even climbed into the “Top Overall” section within all three stores.
I’ve been using the app on my various devices for about a week now. And I’ve got to say that I’m THRILLED with it. I dearly love the tools Google offers, but I’m somewhat sorry that I stayed so long with Reader when there was something as robust as Feedly out there.
