Forest Care Enters Its Final Season

Forest Care is a program that has assisted more than 3,500 owners of forested property in the mountain communities of the San Bernardino National Forest to create healthier, greener, and more fire-safe forested areas since 2006.

Forest Care, through their partners the National Forest Association and Cal Fire and working under a grant from the U.S.D.A. Forest Service, can reimburse owners up to 75% of the cost of thinning trees. Continue reading

California’s National Parks Feel Budget Pinch All The Way From Washington

As if California’s national parks weren’t crowded, dirty, or poorly serviced enough already, the federal budget is now going to muscle even further into the wilderness.

The already-short National Park Service’s $2.75 billion annual budget will see no increase at all in 2013. Because of prior allocations and demands, at least $3 million will be yanked from the budget that pays for visitor centers, cleaning and safety. This means fewer services, shorter hours at at visitor centers, less available camping, trail delays and traffic snarls. Continue reading
