Adventure Scientists: Recruiting Volunteer Adventurers to be Citizen Scientists

Founded in 2011, Adventure Scientists has focused on a unique niche: gathering scientific data from far-flung remote areas without requiring huge expeditions or outlaying mountains of cash to train teams on how to survive these trips.

Adventure Scientists’ approach is to recruit individuals who already have strong outdoor skills to venture into areas they are already familiar with to harvest high-quality data from virtually any environment. Whether it’s fungus from Everest, tree samples from rugged and remote areas in Northern California to promote legal timber harvesting, or surveying water quality of America’s Wild and Scenic Rivers system, AS has sent thousands of volunteers on missions.

Volunteers are trained, and – using skills such as whitewater kayaking, mountaineering, long distance hiking, canyoneering, and even diving – they gather the required scientific data, which AS utilizes to their drive conservation impacts around the world.

From Adventure Scientists: We view each project as an investment, and we vet each project for three key factors. One, that there is a conservation issue in which a lack of access to data has previously limited the ability to unlock solutions. Two, that there is a direct and tangible pathway from data collection to conservation outcomes. Three, that there is a clear need for the outdoor adventurer skillset.

We rely on the outdoor adventure community because they are comfortable in the outdoors and therefore can focus on following protocols. These are individuals who:

  • pay close attention to detail,
  • are creative problem solvers, and
  • are able to share their experiences via the rich tradition of storytelling that is at the heart of the outdoor community.

Through their participation in our projects, Adventure Scientists volunteers become informed ambassadors for the species, places and issues with which they work.

We recruit, train and manage skilled volunteers, saving our partners time, money and effort. If you’re interested in volunteering, you can find out more information at their website HERE.
